ABOUT THE PRESENTATIONS

Presentation: Child Speak: Communicating with Judges and Attorneys
Safety planning with the child welfare system is a shared responsibility with the judge making the ultimate decision as to whether to remove a child from the home and when to return a child home. If you are involved with parenting evaluations, psychological evaluations, therapy, or treatment plans then you need to be prepared to have your work reviewed by judges and attorneys. This training presents a method of defining, assessing, recording, and speaking about child safety. This safety-emphasized method has been taught to those who work in the courts and SRS. However, since child welfare professionals do not consistently use the same language as judges and attorneys, this results in miscommunication. The method used by the court in regard to safety is linear and sequential producing a unique language which is why it is incredibly important to develop a clear understanding of safety between all the parties and members of the child welfare team.

After a brief synopsis of the history and process of the DSM-V, Dr. Long will focus primarily on the changes to the diagnostic criteria for more commonly encountered disorders, signficicant omissions, reorganization, and the addition of new disorders to the DSM-V.

Presentation: Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach
“Why is this kid acting this way?” How come what works for other kids isn’t working for this one?” “What can I do instead?”
The approach described in the book, Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem-Solving Approach, has been applied to children with a wide range of social, emotional, and behavioral challenges and in a wide range of settings: families, schools, and restrictive therapeutic facilities (including inpatient units, residential facilities, and juvenile detention facilities.) The model has also been applied to “ordinary” kids as well as to adults. The model sets forth two major tenets: first, that these challenges are best understood as the byproduct of lagging cognitive skills, and secondly, that these challenges are best addressed by teaching children the skills they lack. This presentation will provide an overview of the basic tenets and provide participants with an introduction to the application of this effective problem solving approach.
Friday April 29, 2011 3:30 - 6:30 pm
